Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

The cold snap has affected many football fans these past few weeks with the majority of lower league matches being postponed because of frozen pitches. No club has felt the importance of this more than Luton Town.

The in form side were ecstatic when on the 28th of December 2008, a 3-2 win over Lincoln City meant that Luton Town were one win away from the psychological milestone of shedding the points deficit that has plagued their club and fans this season. Imagine the disappointment then, when two games were postponed against Chester and Rotherham United, the wait continuing for the loyal Hatters fans for a total of 17 days. That anxious wait could finally be over this evening, when the re-arranged game against Chester takes place.

The Hatters were docked 30 points for this season because of financial irregularities and for exiting administration without a Company Voluntary Arrangement. Twenty nine points later and Luton Town are currently on minus one point.

The game at Chester’s Deva Stadium could see Mick Harford’s Luton side extend their unbeaten run to eight games, and 300-400 Hatters fans are expected to make the 139 mile trip. Whichever brave souls do make the journey will certainly be part of a historical moment in the club’s season if Luton Town do pick up the win.

As well as the postponement of matches, the weather has meant the team has been unable to train on grass for the last ten days. Simon ‘Statto’ Pitts, 32, of lutonfc.com said. “It has been frustrating not playing matches recently, but it has allowed some players to get a much needed rest, and others to have more time to recover from injury. Hopefully the players will just be desperate to get back on the pitch again and we'll keep the unbeaten run going for a little longer yet!”

Luton trail Grimsby Town who lie in relative safety in 22nd place by 15 points. Five wins will close the gap, provided Grimsby are dropping points themselves. A tough call considering The Hatters have only won eight matches all season, but manager Mick Harford is in bullish mood, telling the official Luton website “ I think the way we’ve been playing, if we can recreate the form we’ve shown, we can go to Chester nice and positive and get three points.”

If Luton had not started the season with a points deficit they would be safely mid-table, but with 15 point to make up that is scant consolation. If the unthinkable did happen and The Hatters escaped relegation it will undoubtedly be the fairytale of the season. Harford fantastically told his players, “If at the end of the season we stay up, they can have the biggest party in the world. That’s the incentive; they can party for weeks and weeks if they stay up.” Starting with a possible win tonight, it seems you can forget Ibiza, Luton could be the place to be come May.
